Can't We Be Nice To Muslims?
Written by Peter Youngren on July 14, 2006Have you noticed how unfriendly many Christians are towards Muslims? After September 11 I have known Muslims and traveled in Muslim countries for over 20 years and I can tell you that Islamic nations, just like Christian nations, have their share of violence.
However most Muslims, just like most people in all countries, are peace loving, hardworking people. Most importantly, Jesus died for the world – for everyone.
Our task is not to criticize or attack others, but to share the good news of God’s love revealed in Christ. Many of the “Christian” books that have been written about Islam have titles and subtitles with words like “dark side”, “terrorism” and “jihad”, “unveiling”, “de-masking”. Though Islam has had its fair share of violence in history, we must never forget that we Christians have a violent past. It wasn’t really glorious 800 years ago when the Pope promised warring Crusaders an instant entrance into heaven when they dies in battle against the infidels (which at that time was a term used to describe Muslims).
In his book “Terrorism, Jihad, and the Bible”, John McArthur claims that Muslim suicide bombers are merely expressing “pent up sexual desires” resembling the attitude of their founder. He is historically incorrect and there is no basis for his statement. Is this the way Jesus speaks to unbelievers? McArthur also exaggerates, claiming that the Turks in the late 1800’s killed several million Armenians, when the actual figure is 1.5 million. I guess a million here or there doesn’t matter? Is this the kind of message that Jesus would preach? He loved the Jews, the Samaritans and the Romans. Jesus saved, healed and touched without discrimination. He told His followers to go into the entire world to preach the gospel.
How are we to affect the 1.4 billion Muslims? By demonizing them, or by sharing God’s love revealed in Christ? I for one believe in the power of love. Jesus is the answer. When people of any religion, including Muslims, open their heart to receive His imputed righteousness they become new creations in Christ. Once the new life has come into a person Jesus makes Himself known.
This is the best cure for terrorism and hatred in any culture. Get Jesus to live inside of people. That is why I am writing a book entitled “My Muslim Friends”. I want to build bridges, reach out to people, and have a positive effect instead of creating rage and bigotry. I believe in salvation for the Muslim world. They are Abraham’s descendants and God has promised to bless them. There is no blessing outside of Jesus; this means we must give the message of Jesus Christ to all of Abraham’s descendants.
Let me know what you think. Are you biased against Muslims? Have you shared the gospel of Jesus with Muslims?

About two years ago God opened my husband and I eyes to love and realize that Jesus died for all. Since then we have been ministering to all culture and creed of people including muslims. I have started to visit their homes, talk a lot to them, travel in their car and even know their names. I love them so much and I thank God for allowing me to live amongst them everyday. I will be open to more opportunities to minister to them in every door God opens for truly they are blinded by His Love for them.

Hi Pastor Peter;
You are right about Muslims - we need to share Christ with them and not get bogged down in arguments and discussions that never achieve anything. I have lived among Muslims i.e Mombasa, kenya, and I was a member of one of the fastest growing churches in E Africa (20,000 active members) based in a predominantly Muslim city. I witnessed the Lord saving hundreds daily not as we spoke against Islam and Muhammed but as Christ was preached and His love was seen.
The truth is Muhammed was a remarkable man. He reminds me of Appollos (Acts 17:24-28) who preached Christ but knew only of John’s baptism.
It is clear from the story of Muhammed’s life that he must have come to some knowledge of the truth through contact with Christians and Jews in his travels during his merchant period. Unfortunately, unlike Appollos who had Priscilla and Aquila to instruct him, Muhammed had nobody.
But praise God that we are here and alive in Christ to proclaim Him to our Muslim friends as you put it!

I have shared Jesus to a Muslim lady at my employment. We are all blinded by the enemy until Jesus opens our spiritual ears and eyes and takes the veil away so we can receive His love. We are all one in Him. Jesus died for everyone. We just need to receive what He did for us on the Cross. It is so wonderful, it is beyond our understanding with our finite mind but I am so glad He did die for me. Pastor Prince spirit really spoke to me. Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. Blessings on you both as you minister His great love. I am slow in receiving but the Lord’s grace and mercy are awesome. Pastor Peter the rose I received for Mother’s Day is blooming and blooming and blooming. Thank you so much. I love flowers especially roses and you were right, we can have our own roses right in our own back yard. Thank you and God bless.

Pastor Peter thank you for challenging all peoples to be nice to Muslims & share the love of Jesus Christ….. as HE DID DIE FOR THE WORLD!
Since 9/11 I,personally have harboured grudges in my heart against MUSLIMS. I also read much about jihad, the Islam Faith, studied about Mohammed & particularly so, after reading a book written by two former Muslims ‘Unveiling Islam’ (now Christian teaching theologians) which is a very informative book, but which turned me greatly against the religion of Islam (& in so doing the people).
God, in His infinite mercy & grace since this period of time has put many many muslims in my path in the work I do .... and as I have taken the time to get to know each one as a person realized that they are exactly like me - they care about their children & the world they live in. They conduct themselves very respectfully both in language & lifestyle, are quiet & as you have stated they are peace loving & hardworking people. I discovered they are also extremely family orientated and have strict expectations of their children. (Which we could probably learn a lesson from).
I have had the unique opportunity to establish relationships with many muslims, getting to know them, reach out to them. be kind, loving, understanding & accepting of them.
... I have also had creative opportunities to share the love of Christ with them, play Christian music in their presence & tell them about Jesus.
Since doing this I have grown to LOVE them. I have also discovered that they have responded in love to me. One Sudanese mother with young twin sons says when she returnes from the United Emirates in Sept. wants to know more about Jesus & attend church with me! Before she left she phoned me to say she was going & said .... ‘I love you Sherry I’ll will see you in September’.
This brought tears to my eyes as I remembered when I went through a period of time when I certainly didn’t have any love towards Muslims ..... but God in His grace & merch changed my heart!
As you said Pastor Peter they are peace loving & hardworking people & I have found they are also extremely very family oriented people.

I took Near Eastern History at U.ofT. the last year of University. It was my last exam and I didn’t want to attend it as my Dad had just died the year before. Mum took me out for lunch and convinced me to attend and with God’s help (no studying on my part I passed) As I remember, the course emphasized the strength of the founder’s beliefs and the militant nature of the religion. We also read some of the Koran. The 1st year that T.I.C.C. opened,I taught grade 5 and 6 at a small private school(Senneca Hill) and had the pleasure of becoming a good friend of my co-worker aMuslim from the Near East. The challenge for us to-day is to share Christ’s love.

I completely agree that we Christians have had a share of violence in the past with the Crusades and we have no right to be prejudiced against our Muslim brothers. I live in Hyderabad, India where there are so many muslims. I admire their zeal and I wish they really knew the love of Jesus. I know that they can be the strongest believers. There are quite a few in my church and one of them Pastors a congregation now!!. I remember Brother Karl Youngren’s interview in Celebrate magazine where he participated in a debate with a Muslim brother. The interview stated how the muslims had afterwards come and hugged him. Bro. Karl is it possible to share a transcript of the debate? I would love to read it - the interview left me hungry for more :). I am really at loss of words on how to speak with Muslims and try sharing my faith with them. I know they are very loving people, but I just dont know how to reach to them. I would love some guidance. Love in Christ, Oliver.

You are right. we should be nice towards muslims as matter fact my best friend is Inian muslim who is smart, hard working, generous man. as well as very well liked by co-workers and friends(like Me) and family members. So, not all muslims are violent and not all violents are muslims in fact I find that(in my opinion) muslims are fun to be around, loyal friends

As I was reading this article I am wondering also about the new age people.
I was raised Catholic and we called ourselves christians and I always remembered having an awareness of Gods presence in my life all the time. As an older teen I went on a bit of a path of the so called new age, then when I got married in my early twenties my husband and I go saved and water baptized. (Even though I beleive I got saved when I was Roman Catholic and filled with the Holy Spirit.) We then moved into the christian circle and got involved with the church. We have 3 girls as well. Even though great things happened for us personally in the church, I noticed there was also a lot of stife and division trying to creep in our lives. I also saw so many other christians going through the same thing. So much stife and division. There is a lot of bondage. What’s with that? And why are so many Christians getting divorced? The rate seems to be getting higher every day. What god are they following and whose voice are they listening to? Is my question? Could it be that their hearts are not open to the real love of Christ that comes when we walk with him daily and keep our minds open to other people’s feelings regardless of the religion. We actually pulled back from the church for awhile and actually felt our lives become much happier.
I have heard a few so called new age speakers lately including Eckart Tolle and what they are saying rings bells for me. They talk more about God’s love then most Chrisitians I know. If we do not straighten our own selves out first, how in the world can we affect other people for the gospel of Christ. I strongly beleive that it is the love in each one of us that brings victory to our lives.
So yes i beleive we need to love the muslims to, they are people. But there is also deceptions in our own back yard, the christian church.
We always see the speck in someone else’s eye but do not see the log in our own.
I just wonder sometimes what the difference is in some of these other religions, especially the so called new age people (not the occult, because I know the difference of that) people like Oprah. She talks about the love of God and how God loves everybody and doesn’t judge people, how is that new age. I don’t understand. When the most important thing said is in love isn’t that all that matters. After all God is love.
Anybody have any feedback to help me understand, I welcome it.

Praise the Lord Jesus who was, who is and who is to come. A million to You Lord for Your Word in John 3:16 For God so loved the world…....including all the Muslims. Jesus died for the whole world. And He is no respecter of people. But He is a respecter of faith. Thank you Pastor Peter Youngren for intruducing the Lord Jesus to the Muslims. I have seen in your magazine “World Impact” you have won hundred and thousands of Muslims to the Lord. Truly God is very pleased with your ministry and so with the rest like ...Joseph Prince, Joyce Meyer. Kenneth Copeland and so much more. Thank you Jesus. We give You all the glory, honor and praise for Your grace is suffiicient and Your strength is made perfect in our weakness. In Jesus mighty and matchless name which is above all names. Amen and amen6

This is a great blog Pastor Peter! I had the opportunity to attend a muslim function for a birthday yesterday and was delighted. I discussed the covering of the head etc…and had the chance to witness to some in attendance. What a privilege to share the love of Christ with others. We as Christians need to remember our track record you mentioned and always keep our light shining brightly toward all people. I was very uncomfortable speaking to muslim people about Jesus in the past, however you have helped me to better understand Grace, Faith, and most importantly LOVE for everyone. Thank you for all your wonderful teaching/preaching from the Word of God to help us emulate our Lord Jesus Christ. Cheers!
