Greasy Legalism
Written by Peter Youngren on April 3, 2007I have just about seen enough articles, teaching albums, etc. advertised under titles like “Greasy Grace”, “Crazy Grace”, or “Grace Gone Wild”. While I am sure that just about everything can be abused, even grace because the Bible says so. These three titles that warn against the grace message don’t have a clue and often have little or no knowledge of what the message is. Instead they build up a phantom and an attack that their imagination has created. It goes something like this: “Those who preach a radical message of God’s grace are people looking for a low commitment, a low level Christian life where anything goes because sin is tolerated (after all, Jesus paid for them).” Often writers are connecting the message of grace with general moral decay in the church and in the world. I used to have this opinion of grace teaching myself only seven or eight years ago. I had never really heard the message but just assumed that people who would preach that all sin, past, present and future had been paid for by Jesus, couldn’t be doing anything good with their sermons, in fact they must be something negative (creating a license to sin).
The fact is that it is not grace that is greasy, it is legalism. Paul writes in Romans 6:14, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” By Paul’s definition what causes greasy living is legalism. Grace on the other hand brings freedom from the greasy debt of sin. When a person receives the free gift of Christ’s righteousness in the abundance of grace, their heart overflows with gratitude (Romans 5:17). In fact, it doesn’t inspire sin but holiness. Just like the apostle Paul wrote that the goodness of God brings us to repentance.
What is greasy about legalism? It seems that when the focus is on “self” the thinking goes something like this, “Look at how much I am doing for God; praying, teaching, sharing, and suffering for Christ. No wonder the devil is attacking me. This secret sin that I harbor is a sin that the devil is really attacking me with, and after all, it can’t be that bad because look at all the good I am doing.” Notice how many times the word “I” appeared in the last two sentences. This is how legalism opens the door for sin, when one assesses one’s own good deeds weighed against the not-so-good. As long as we can put a lot of points in the positive column, whether it’s fasting, praying, Bible reading, church attendance, giving of money or whatever, surely all that must outweigh the bad. That kind of thinking is straight out of Legalism 101.
On the contrary, Gospel thinking goes likes this; “If I follow God’s commandments and do everything that God says in His Word 99.9 % of the time, what will be the result?” The answer is quite simple and found in both the books of Deuteronomy and Galatians: I will be 100% cursed. You see, the Gospel doesn’t teach a portion of the blessing, i.e. if you are 10% obedient you get 10% blessing while if you increase your obedience to 20% you get 20% blessing. No, if you are only disobedient in even .1% you get 100% of the curse. If you do everything right but in one area not, you just get everything involved in the curse. The only way is to trust in Jesus’ obedience, His righteousness, His finished work, and receive it as a free gift. Condemnation, condescension and guilt inducing sermons never made anyone holy. Falling in love with Jesus is what will produce true holiness. Get out of greasy legalism and get into the free gift available from God for everyone who believes in His imparted righteousness, and then live out of the revelation of Christ in you.
Don’t worry about God’s grace perverting people, the more of it, the better. In fact, the cure for a defeated life is an abundance of grace (Romans 5:17). To call what God has done in Christ “greasy”, “crazy” and “gone wild” is at best ignorant and at worst I don’t even want to say. Your thoughts?
Keep blogging.

Dear Pastor,
The carnal mind and the religious mind cannot comprehend the grace of God.
Most Christians believe that we are saved by grace but that we need to maintain our salvation by obeying the 10 commandments.Grace is from start to finsh.
Salvation is not our responsibility,it’s God’s.Because it is not a work of man for God but a work of God for man!
The carnal & religious mind depends alot on self effort & performance. We have to preach the pure Gospel that is all of grace and not of works.Rom 11:6.Works are just the fruit of God’s grace working in our lives!
Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness. His willingness to be circumcised and to offer Isaac when God tested him was a a fruit of that belief which is the root.(Faith righteousness or righteousness as a gift.)
Agape and have a grace filled week,
Jeffrey

Hello Pastor Peter :>
Its hard to even comprehend how great God’s grace is. Its absolutely mind blowing amazing :> I love how it gets everyone in an uproar… Jesus made the gospel so increadibly simple it confused the crap out of everyone… cuz it has absolutely nothing to do with us, or our abilities.. ( unlike the law…where its all about us) but everything rests completely on Him and what Hes already done.
And what he did is enough for everyone on the earth today, and all those still to come. How awesome is that? We serve an awesome God.
WOO HOO!
God rocks.

Dear Pastor Peter,
I so appreciate your consistency in teaching the gospel of grace, and not attempting to balance it with something else. For years I sat under teaching that taught mostly law or that attempted to balance grace with law. That kind of indoctrination really messes people up because it always gravitates to making it about us instead of Jesus.
It seems that most of Christianity misunderstands grace. In 1 Peter 4:10 Peter calls it ‘the manifold grace of God’. That tells me that there are many aspects of the grace of God.
I believe that God showed me that grace is everything. Grace is everything that God gives us, shares with us, promises us, makes available to us, works in and through us—because of Jesus. ‘For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of [his] good pleasure’ (Phil. 2:13).
Grace is the only way anyone can receive the capacity to live the Christian life. Grace is the life of Jesus in us and through us. Christ is our life. ‘When Christ, [who is] our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory’ (Col. 3:4).
Only Jesus can live the Christian life—I can’t do it. It’s all by Christ in us, the hope of glory.
‘...Christ in you, the hope of glory:’ (Col 1:27). The only hope we have of bringing glory to God by our lives is Christ in us.
Maybe its time that the Church pick up where the reformation of 500 years ago left off. It got the part about initial salvation being by grace alone through faith alone. Maybe now it can also begin to receive the revelation that the only way to live a moral life (as defined by the New Testament) is by grace alone through faith alone. ‘For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:’ (Eph 2:8). The ongoing work of salvation in a believer’s life is by grace alone through faith alone.
The only thing that I have found the can counteract the ill effects of mixing grace and legalism is hearing the pure radical gospel of grace over, and over, and over again.
Grace is the main thing that makes Christianity different from anything else.

Praise God pastor for this insight into grace. It is liberating enough to a hungry soul. Here in Kenya there is so much legalism and self-righteousness(having a set of rules which upon keeping I feel righteous).Grace is His heartbeat and my need.
Praying for you and the great grace team.

Grace is amazing! ‘Behold what manner of love the father has bestored upon us, that we should be called children of God!’ It is merciful and empowering. It is like medicine; it heals us from sinful life. ‘He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their desructions.’(Psalm107:20) It is the ability or power to live as children of God-no sin. ‘But as many as recieved Him, to them He gave the right(power) to become children of God…’ It’s a help in times of need(trials). ‘Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace , that we may obtain mercy and fing grace to help in time of need.’(Heb.4:16) Grace is a leader. ‘He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.’(Psalm 23:3) In conclusion, grace is your partner in your walk with God; helping and leading you in the right paths.

I have not ever heard of greasy grace before. To me, it is a contradiction of terms. Did God not say that we are saved by Grace and not of works that we should boast? God has also written his law in our hearts. Paul taught that our hearts are circumcised. Perhaps we should stick to concentrating on Our Heavenly Father
and His gift to us this Easter season and not on schisms of belief among the ‘so called ’ brethren . I want to thank God for the production of Eight Days at
TICC this Easter. Toronto is Blessed by all that the Lord is doing through you,
your son and God’s team at TICC. Thank you, Jesus!

Grace works in us both to will and to do God’s pleasure. Grace grants the power walk in the paths of righteousness. Grace does not encourage sin but enhances righteousness. Grace is God’s gift to the world; helping to restore man to his glorious position. Man lacks the ability to be called a child of God without grace. With grace, we can be all God wants us to be. Praise the Lord!

the term greasy grace, crazy grace was coined from Dietrich Bonheiffer. Basically what he said has been taken out of context. he used it as a term against the german lutherans during the WWII because they did not stand up against Hitler during the Holocaust. He was against the fact that christendom was silent against the systematic annihilation of the jews, God’s people. this was due to the false doctrine of replacement theology whereby the church has replaced God’s chosen people, the jews as His Chosen since they crucified christ. My friends, it goes to show how blind we’ve been. With every truth, there is a distortion. Just so it is with this gospel of grace (as Paul put it forth). Isn’t it amazing when Jesus was on earth, the pharisees said that it was by the Prince of Demons that Jesus could drive out demons and remember what Jesus said in response, a kingdom divided against itself will never stand. Satan knows what the message of Jesus love can do. Because it denies him of His power to accuse and put guilt into our lives. By means of that we will never be free and continue living either a defeated christian life or at best trying to please God through all the practises we know how. That’s self righteousness. And law promotes that. But those who live by the law must do everything in the law. Break one break all. no wonder we always feel so condemned. Just like Paul in Romans 7 But Romans 8:1 There is no condemnation anymore. That’s grace. Grace removes condemnation and guilt. Grace frees us from trying to live a live of pleasing God with human efforts. Just as it was in those days of Jesus on earth and many who oppose him, so it is in our days too. but do we back off and follow the status quo or the majority or are we willing to take up the cross and declare our freedom through the blood of Christ.
That’s revolution!!!

you must not expect the Grace of God thru Christ Jesus to be understood by all. the grace message is for the higher realm and it’s only when you’ve an open mind, a childlike mind, an humble mind free from mental box and graven images of Christ Jesus and God’s Grace, that u can grasp it.
the carnal mind(lower state of consiouness) can never understand the things of the Spirit(higher state of consiouness).
the problem is peeps dont understand the gospel yet, that the gospel is Christ consiousness/Christ mind. when you posses this you’ll never think of failure, sickness, sin etc, rather u’ll think righteousness, peace and joyin the Holy Ghost.
beloved
The message of grace and what it accomplishes must be preached.
There is one question that remains a mystery to me…Heb 10:19-39.
Specifically verse 26 alludes to those who sin willfully even if they know grace should expect judgement.
Explain the context of this passage if you would.
My only observation is that if one wilfully sins (rely on self) then the cross is of no effect and the judgement comes from being under the law again.
Grace Preacher
Dear Beloved
I think you understand the meaning very well. What you said reminds me of Galatians 5:4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
The Hebrew Christians went back to animal sacrifices. That is why they were warned of judgment. They had started to turn to a different gospel. Regularly focusing on grace is the answer. But Remember James 3:2 We all stumble in many ways. 1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. At the present only our Spirit is perfected. And we still sin sometimes because of indwelling sin. We will get our new glorified bodies at the rapture. Then we will never sin again.
But we are righteous now. 1 Corinthians 1:30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
God Bless

its as if we ve run into a brick wall , and all are concerned with saving their own skin . as far as getting into the kingdom or not getting into the kingdom i think it can be fairly said that the only sure passport into the kingdom of heaven is through the doorway of Yahweh , the one we call Jesus / Yeshua ,
unless a man is born again he will not see the kingdom of heaven ,
i think the great power that has been given to the great debate of lawlessness vs legalism hinges on the misunderstanding of the next important question .
now that we are saved and adopted as children of the most high , secure and without fear of abandonment…. how shall we conduct ourselves in his house .
at the marriage supper of the lamb if he asks you to sit in the chair to the left and you choose to sit in the chair on the right will we say that grace provided the freedom ?
certainly not .... the commandments are eternal , that is determined throughout scripture . that the defining of the kingdom must fit within the boundaries of his outlined ways… which he says clearly is His law.
we are entered into the kingdom on yeshua s obedience , however now that this has been dealt with , we are free to grow in our understanding of how he wishes his children to behave .
obedience when we depend on Yeshuas sacrifice for our citizen rights is a matter of obeying his request of his children
obedience to the law without dependancy on Yeshua s sacrifice for our citizenship will earn us what it always has, falling short , missing the mark
obedience is not a bad thing when viewed in the proper context.
Larry
Daryl asks “at the marriage supper of the lamb if he asks you to sit in the chair to the left and you choose to sit in the chair on the right will we say that grace provided the freedom” ? Grace is not a license to sin. We will not even be capable of disobedience when we are at the marriage supper of the lamb. For then we will have our new bodies incapable of sinning. The law will not make you holy. Hebrews 7:11 If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron?
Philippians 3:9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
It’s important to remember that the purpose of the law was to make people look for grace. As Christians if we tried to follow the old testament laws. We would have to take our eyes off of Jesus to do that. The law is holy and good but we don’t try to follow it. The bible says God set it aside. Romans 7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. The bible is crystal clear “only grace produces holiness.” Any “good behavior that we try to produce is still dead works.” Even though it may look good. We are supposed to rest in Christ and let Him live His life through us. Anything else is dead works. Colossians 2:6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him,

Its amazing how narrow minded this conversation can become.
1Jn 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. (kjv)
how did he walk? perfectly to the spirit and letter of torah(the law).
so what is christ?
The Word (Jn. 1:1-3, 14-18; Rev. 19:13)
The Light (Jn. 8:12; 1:4-5, 9; 3:19; 9:5; 12:35-36, 46; 14:6)
The Truth (Jn. 14:6)
The Way (Jn. 14:6)
what is the torah?
The Word (Is. 2:3)
The Light (Prov. 6:23; Ps. 119:105; Is. 8:20; 51:4)
The Truth (Ps. 119:142, 151)
The Way (Deut. 9:12; 11:22-28; 30:15-16)
you see by definition, THE WORD(JESUS) IS THE LAW.
Salvation is attained by grace through faith, as it has always been, as it was in the days of Abraham, as it was in the days of Habbakuk.
when he says “be holy as I am holy” he can only mean one thing, be set apart in your lives as i am set apart and revealed myself through my instruction (torah)
1Pe 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
its only by faith any of us have any claim to anything with God.
so how hard is it to learn his commandments WHICH ARE GOOD! by faith??? and do them BY FAITH?
how hard is it to use the grace we’ve been given to work out our bad habits of, using his name in vain, lying, stealing, lusting, wasting his sabbath day etc etc. that is the whole point of grace! to enable us.
the grace necessary to ‘be transformed into the fullness of christ’ etc.
i’m sorry but honestly, enough already of ‘the law is such a bad thing’ that is such an insult to God, to his word and to his people.
John
I don’t remember anyone on this topic “Greasy Legalism” saying the law is bad. Just remember the laws purpose. Many Christians wrongly look to the law to try and live the Christian life. Sometimes context is better than an abundance of scriptures. Grace teaching makes many Christians angry because they cannot follow it and glory in their own works. As a person grows in grace they will grow in holiness. The law is holy and good. But remember (Heb 8:7) For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.
(Heb 8:8) Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;
So God found fault with the law. He found no fault with Jesus. I’ve seen many people get really angry at grace preaching. Which means they don’t really get it yet. Or they like following a ton of rules because they get their sense of value from that. And they aren’t getting it from Christ. Doesn’t that seem like the pharisees. Legalistic people always spend so much time talking about rules. Even if they follow them, it isn’t in the right Spirit. I used to be a legalist. Grace is better. Remember Paul tried so hard to follow the law that He even killed people and thought He was serving God. When Paul got a revelation of grace, then He became a great servant of God. There’s no deeper conversation Christians can have than talking about Christ our righteousness. That is the meat of the word.

Hi John, thank you for replying. I wonder if it is me you are referring to as ‘Legalistic people…’ and ‘many christians look to the law’ and ‘an angry christian’
or one that ‘gets value from following tons of rules’ that ‘doesn’t get it’ ‘seem like pharisees’ and ‘are only able to follow in the wrong spirit’
perhaps you are referring to your old self, and somehow projecting this false concept of a fallen christian on others. I would pray that this isn’t the view that you have of me or my beliefs from my short post.
It is exactly that attitude that causes this line of talk to be insulting. As if your current walk and understanding the liberty of lawlessness is something to be attained after as a ‘higher way’.
What would you say of Paul or Peter for example, when they continued to faithfully enjoy the sabbath day, and all the feasts of the kingdom within leviticus? Even Peter many years after the resurrection of Christ still observed faithfully the laws of clean and unclean foods.
Lets and retake a look at Heb 8:7, it wasn’t his commandments that he had fault with, it was the atonement for sin that he had fault with, that is, the sacrifice of animals was unable to clease one from sin. hence the need of a new covenant that can deal with the sin issue.
God didn’t take all of his efforts to reveal himself over centuries to one day decide to erase everything that ever mattered to him. certainly not.
that is the impression you give when you said “hey like following a ton of rules because they get their sense of value from that. And they aren’t getting it from Christ.” and somehow attribute that paul was also some lawless preacher, allow me to direct you to what paul was really about.
Act 21:20 When they heard about it, they praised God and told him, “You see, brother, how many thousands of believers there are among the Jews, and all of them are zealous for the law.
Act 21:21 But they have been told about you-that you teach all the Jews living among the gentiles to forsake the Law of Moses, and that you tell them not to circumcise their children or observe the customs.
Paul went on to observe the instructions of James or whoever it was and according to the law, cleansed himself and submitted himself to the laws of the nazarene vow.
Please do not misunderstand me. Salvation is by the grace of Elohim, through faith in his Son Yeshua. The law is, and forever will be, in this world and the next, the word, teaching, instruction, measuring rod and spiritual goal of our lives as we trust, follow and love Elohim with all our hearts mind and strength. If you cannot see this, then i respectfully encourage you to read your scriptures more thoroughly and with open eyes.
John
Hi Dominic
I will try to answer as best I can. I personally believe all Christians (myself included) still have some legalistic attitudes or thoughts in our lives. We still live in our corrupted bodies of flesh. It was not my intention to offend. I don’t know what else to say except when people talk of grace , people sometimes get upset. ( I am not upset, I hope your not). I should point out that I got saved several yrs. ago and I’ve never been a “fallen Christian.” You’d said earlier you ‘d considered this grace talk “narrow minded.” and “As if your current walk and understanding the liberty of lawlessness is something to be attained after as a ‘higher way’.” I never taught such a thing. What I am essentially teaching is very much what Paul taught the Galatians. You get saved , stay saved , and live the Christian life. By focusing on Christ and Him crucified. James 1:25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
Regarding Sabbath days etc. Colossians 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.
Colossians 2:17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
As far as your comment “God didn’t take all of his efforts to reveal himself over centuries to one day decide to erase everything that ever mattered to him. certainly not.” Jesus said “Behold , I make all things new.” Romans 10:4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. I am not looking to Jesus sacrifice plus what I do. Just Jesus. Christ and Him crucified. I still go to church on Sundays. I still serve God everyday. I think motivation is important.I love God because He first loved me. I serve God , not because I have to. But because of who He is to me , in me and through me. Since I experienced a paradigm shift from a legalistic to a grace based attitude. I spend more time talking about Jesus , less about keeping rules. That doesn’t mean that all rules are bad. Or that the law is bad. The law is good but Jesus (grace ) is better. Lastly how can the “law be your measuring rod and spiritual goal.” Romans 7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. (Col 1:27 NKJV) To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. If you died to the law , how is their any hope of glory through the law. You already died and Christ in you is the only hope of glory.
I want you to know that my response was prayerfully written. I am very passionate about the doctrine of grace. In no way did I intend to be anything other than loving and helpful. And I do acknowledge you have some very good things to say. But even if you still fundamentally disagree. It doesn’t change the fact that we’re brothers In Christ. I believe that Jesus cares more that we love one another, than who has the most accurate doctrine. You probably believe the same thing (I hope you do).
God Bless

I heard someone say recently something like this… “if you are to love God’s law it is important that you know the purpose of God’s law. Although in Christ I am free from serving God’s law, I love it more than ever. I love God’s law because it was designed by Him to prove I can never attain righteousness with God by keeping it. It is impossible to gain right-standing with God through the law. Righteousness is a gift provided only in Christ.”
When we finally get a glimpse of the passionate intention of Father to have intimacy with us individually, we might begin to see the commandments are actually promises. When we are living life through the lens of being unconditionally loved by Him we finally have hope that we shall not kill, we shall not covet, we shall do this and that… because we have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer we that life but Christ lives within us…” The fruit of abiding in Him will be our focus instead of striving in our keeping of instructions.

Hi John, you seem like a really nice person I’m sure we would be great friends. I appreciate your willingness to find common ground with me, as we do share in the most important of shared ground that is, Messiah and him raised from the dead for our opportunity at life everlasting, by faith and trust in almighty Elohim.
It needs to be pointed out that I am not unfamiliar with the grace teaching, in fact I studied under Peter at NCC for several years, I highly respect and love Peter very much, and praise Elohim for the grace and work that he has accomplished through him.
Somehow it seems, not limited to you, but just in general, even on both sides of the coin, as soon as someone refers to an extremity of grace, or of law it provokes the other to defend their faith whichever way they may sway to. I wanted to use this reply to appeal that we likely agree more than either of us may suspect. The clear difference between you and I is our instruction and experience of ‘the torah and the Tanak’ that is, the ‘old testament’.
The other root issue here isn’t so much directly related to grace vs. law, but rather the expectation put within the scriptures on gentiles vs. Jews. As I posted before, we see there is a completely different result in the faith of messiah from the Jewish people, they, with faith in messiah were more zealous for the law than before! And continued to teach and lead faith in messiah AND observance to the laws, traditions and customs of almighty El within the Tanak.
The Gentiles however, on the other hand had no such expectation laid upon them, at least not in such a clear manner. In acts we are clearly shown that Elohim esteems their faith above any observances and gifts the gentiles with the Holy Spirit, contrary to the expectations put forth by the Jewish community.
The instructions given to the gentiles in acts 15 were very wisely chosen, and in fact cover a multitude of chapters within the torah, to ensure they refrain from abominable practices to almighty El.
Act 15:29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
These rules that were established are truly direct citations of commandments in the torah given to the Jews and ‘strangers or foreigners that sojourn among them’. Each one of those commands cover long lists of specifics that are all summed up in, abstain from food offered to idols, from having any interactions with blood and things strangled, and refrain from whoring.
From the Jewish perspective, these are considered the gateway rules, as in, attitudes that would be considered necessary in order to extend any lasting or meaningful arm of fellowship between the two people groups. You can do a full study on that, they are called Noahide Laws.
Further to be noted is the great theme throughout the scriptures of messiah uniting the tribes and gentiles into one people for Elohim, a new creation. This mass move of prophecy was certainly held in mind when the council met and designated the preliminary foundations to the uniting of the two peoples, as one day, we all know, we will no longer be here, and the truth of the words ‘there are now no longer Jew or gentile in Christ’ will be experienced fully by all in the New Kingdom.
That ideally should be the focus and understanding of one looking to learn or adopt any of the laws or traditions within the torah.
Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Throughout the scriptures we see the promise of his torah being the staple of spiritual, political and moral law of the government of the new kingdom. It is with this knowledge through the scriptures that one way or another, whether Jew or gentile, we all will learn and abide by his laws in the new kingdom. To some this will be an awful culture shock, and others will walk right in fully aware.
I hope this better expresses where I have been coming from, and potentially clears up any misunderstandings anyone might have had about me.
Grace and Peace to you all!
John
Hi Dominic , thank you for your gracious words. I feel the same way. It is so easy to be misunderstood when communicating in this way because you and I cannot look at each others faces. Which makes it harder to see where the heart is coming from. I don’t know when you studied with Peter Youngren. But He has only been into the message of grace for about 8 yrs. (He admits he used to be very legalistic). I must say I am not quite sure what you mean by “an extremity of grace.” When you add any works to grace it ceases to be grace. I think most of the church has the misconception that grace teaching causes people to sin. Years ago I used to work at this retail store. One sunday I was offered overtime (which was twice the payrate). I did my job before. But now I went way above the call of duty. I found a way that we could save time and get more work done. I really wanted to do well for the company because of how I was being treated. I’ve found it works the same way with Jesus. He’s done everything for us. Now I want to serve Him. My understanding is that eating meat offered to an idol is not sinful in and of itself. (1 Cor 8:4 NKJV) Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. (1 Cor 8:7 NKJV) However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
(1 Cor 8:8 NKJV) But food does not commend us to God; for neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.
(Mat 6:25 KJV) Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
(Mat 6:31 KJV) Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(Mat 15:17 NKJV) “Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?
(Mat 15:18 NKJV) “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.
(Rom 14:14 NKJV) I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.
(1 Cor 10:25 NKJV) Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; The bible says (1 Cor 6:12 NKJV) All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. I believe the Israelite Christians were given certain rules. So that they wouldn’t violate their consciences. However when they grew in grace and become mature Christians. They would realize their need to get rid of the law.
What I see in scripture concerning the law is basicallly exactly what Toby wrote. (Rom 3:19 NKJV) Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. I love the law , it helped show me my need for grace. Now that I am under grace. My life is no longer dominated by sin.
(Rom 6:14 NKJV) For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. Dominic if I am reading you wrong , please forgive me. But I am still under the impression that you want to focus on old testament laws and rules. Galatians chapter 4 essentially talks about the law and grace. And tells you to throw out the law. Remember scripture does call the law the ministry of condemnation and death. (Gal 5:1 NKJV) Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage(meaning the law). Everyone who is genuinely born again knows you get saved by grace alone. But then many try to maintain grace with works. By trying to follow laws. I am really trying to understand where your coming from. Maybe I am misunderstanding you. Either way I love ya and am praying for God’s best in every area of your life.
Hope to hear from you.
God Bless

I heard a great analogy that went something like this. “A christian trying to follow the ten commandments and focus on laws instead of fixing their eyes on Jesus is like a married man who goes away on a business trip for two weeks. Then He returns home to his wife. He knocks on the door. She opens it and smiles at him. He ignores her , walks right past her and picks up a photograph of her and starts hugging and kissing the photograph”. The law was always a shadow. Jesus is the substance. Col 2:17 All those things are mere shadows cast before what was to come; the substance is Christ.
Praise God. Grace rules.
“Cheap Grace?” Try going to God and telling Him that His Son’s blood was cheap.

HI Aaron. Thanks for the link. What a great blog. I hope Peter does a blog about “The Shack” by William P. Young. I hate it when legalistic Christians talk about “cheap grace.” The amazing unconditional grace of God has brought great healing to those who choose to accept sound doctrine. Unfortunately their isn ‘t many good grace preachers out there yet. Thank God for your Peter Youngrens and Steve Mcveys and the like.
Blessings To All

We are saved by grace only if Christians keep the 10 commandments. There is nothing greasy about grace. Christ died at the cross being the sacrificial lamb. When Christ died the hand writing of ordinances written by the hand of Moses was blotted out at the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”
Jesus is the free gift of Grace.
Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came
upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness
of one THE FREE GIFT came upon all men unto justification of
life.
Matthew 1:21 “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
When Christ died on the cross, he died for our (those who believe and have faith in Jesus Christ) sins. If Christians break the law (ten commandments) on purpose then you no longer have grace of the law.
What is sin? Sin is breaking the 10 commandments.
1John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Romans 6:1 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin,
that grace may abound? 2 GOD FORBID. ....”
Romans 6:14-15 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.15 What then? shall we sin, because
we are not under the law, but under grace? GOD FORBID.
Exo.20:6 “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
Rev. 22:14-15 “Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Adam says “When Christ died on the cross, he died for our (those who believe and have faith in Jesus Christ) sins. If Christians break the law (ten commandments) on purpose then you no longer have grace of the law.” The law never brought grace. Jesus did. Adam with love and respect I say to you that if that what you said above were true no one would make Heaven. The strictest definition of sin is “anything not done from faith.” Romans 14:23 says “and everything that does not come from faith is sin.” As a Christian you died to the law and without law sin is not imputed. Jesus said the only unforgivable sin was blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Fix your eyes on Jesus , not on the law. Fixing your eyes on the law will only stir up the desire to sin.
Love and Blessings to you.

Thanks Peter ,I praise God for the Truth that He has brought you into. For those who want to be justified by the law, or by doing the word{by trying to be every thing the new testiment say’s a christian is},Jesus was the embodiment of the law {he fufilled ALL righteousness} but he was’nt controlled by the written code, he was led by spirit of the Father whom he fully surendered to. He showed a more exellent way of righteosnes , the way of the Spirit of his Love, and Grace. The law was a revelation of what righteousenes wasn’t ‘do not’ , Jesus reveilled the very nature of God , LOve . Chist in us, God’s Love in our new hearts. Love is so far above the law that the law is no longer needed to guide us, God’s love guides us , not us trying to love but his love written on our hearts because of cross of Jesus. Grace isn’t a lower standard it’s a higher one. If we have love for one another, we walk in the light as he is in the light. love Tom
