"Hate religion; Love Jesus” video approaches 18 million views

Written by Peter Youngren on February 1, 2012

This article was published in the St.Catharines Standard.

Chances are you’ve already heard about the four minute video “Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus”, produced by 22 year old Jefferson Bethke from Tacoma, Washington. It has gone viral, approaching 18 million views on Youtube in just over three weeks. Last month I wrote about Justin Bieber’s tattoo depicting Jesus, Tim Tebow’s prayers on the football field, and Hollywood actor Gary Busey beating an Indian drum, invoking the name of Jesus during a guest appearance on ‘Celebrity Wife Swap’. My point was that Jesus keeps showing up in unlikely places, and now here we go again.

Of course, the ‘know-it-all’ religious experts are up in arms. Aren’t they always? Christian magazines and internet bloggers are issuing words of caution. Some find Bethke’s theology insulting, because of its’ simplicity, while others think they have found something contradictory in his presentation. How much systematic theology can be crammed into a 4 minute video in the first place? Give the young man a break, some pastors can barely get through their opening joke in four minutes on Sunday morning, never mind addressing any real issues. Here are a couple of Bethke’s lines:

“Religion puts you in bondage, while Jesus sets you free / Religion makes you blind, while Jesus makes you see.” And how about this, “Why does it build huge churches, but fails to feed the poor? / Tells single moms God doesn’t love them, if they’ve ever had a divorce?”

The message is clear, “Because He took the crown of thorns, and the blood dripped down His face / He took what we all deserved; I guess that’s why you call it grace.”

Since so many pastors criticize Bethke, let me reiterate some of the reasons why I believe he is right on and why 18 million have tuned in.

First, the ‘million dollar’ question: What is religion?  Simply put, it is any system of belief, ceremony or ritual that claims to bring a person to God, in contrast to Jesus, who is God from God come to show us who God really is. Jesus didn’t come to give the world an institutionalized religious system, but to give hope to all. This is not an argument against “organized religion”. Whether religious rituals are found in historical church liturgies or a modern day charismatic church where people have their arms raised in prayer, one tradition is not better or worse than the other. Either one can be a forum for life-less repetitions, or a place where people encounter the reality of Jesus.

Frankly, Jesus works in organized or disorganized settings; He gives grace wherever the humble is found, inside or outside religion. Of course we can have relationship with God outside of organized religion. How else would a believer under solitary confinement in a North Korean prison be able to worship God?

Some suggest that to separate Jesus from religion is symptomatic of our narcissistic, egocentric culture, where worship has turned into a self-centered quest, “God I want You, I love You, I’m desperate for You, I need You”, or, “Save me, love me, let me touch You”. In fact loving Jesus is the anti-dote to this pretense that God has withdrawn into an ivory tower and has to be pleaded with to get involved in the human scenario. To focus on Jesus is the opposite of narcissism; in Jesus, we truly see God’s love and majesty.

A cursory reading of the Gospels tells us that Jesus did come to demolish religious systems that exclude people. His message was for all. Bottom line, Jesus attracted the kind of people religion find repulsive, while he repulsed those who religion found attractive.  It is about time we’d figure that out.

The “Hate religion, Love Jesus,” theme speaks to my heart .  That’s where I try to live.  Keep it up.  I don’t profess to hate religion, because so many people for whom Christ died, live there and I love them and want to liberate them.  Do you read me?  God bless you and them with His limitless love.  John

It’s the new underground pop to call oneself Awake, and others, sheep.
Nowadays everybody is calling everybody deluded, stupid, uneducated, sheeple, blind, deaf, mute etc. People are addicted to posting their opinions on forums and Facebook pages etc.  If you don’t agree with their particular theological, political, or philosophical stance, you are deluded, unedicated,  apostate, you are fighting the gospel or you are going to hell. What strange existence?
I think agnosticism is the honest position.  Non of us know -  from a strictly realistic point of view no one ( including scientists)  cant neither affirm nor deny the existence of God or the afterlife. We can’t realistically take a firm position on any topic that has not been fully uncovered, explored, analyzed, and documented. To claim there is no “God” and block out any possibility of such, is asinine. Likewise, to claim there is a “God”, for sure, without really knowing for sure, or knowing which God in particular, if God even has any form at all, is also erroneous for obvious reasons. Thus, how about opening the beauty of a mind in wonder rather than closing our minds by belief?

I agree with that guy 0. wish we had more people like him telling the really great news of Jesus instead of messages of great fear if a person doesn’t live up it the pastors standards

I quite agree with you. If religion is a means of bringing people to God, then Jesus is the true religion because He is the Way to God, the Truth to know about the true God and Life in which we live in God now and will forever.  There are many religions and dieties that people beleive are existing, it is therefore the responsibilities of all Christians to make known the true religion to the world and that is Christianity. When we are asked of our Religion,  we affirmed it is Chrisitianity. Christianity means Christlikeness which also means to be like Jesus and you cannot be like Jesus without JESUS.

AMEN! I wholeheartedly agree 100%....
i find this blog entry so encouraging, and am glad you took a stand for him. I’ve found it extremely unfair how much flack he’s been getting lately, especially all the unoriginal off-shoot spoken word videos made in response to criticise him. They keep saying the same thing, that’s he’s not elaborated on what he meant in his video enough…but just as you said, exactly how much theological teaching can one fit into a simple 4 minute poem?? If he had followed everyone’s advice and actually elaborated everything, it would’ve been more like a couple hour sermon rather than a spoken word poem! The point wasn’t to do a big sermon, it was to make a powerful statement through creative art mediums such as poetry and video.
And sadly, mostly everyone seems to have missed that point entirely.

I think the problem here is peoples individual definitions of religion.  And all this hoopla probably centers around peoples personal experiences with other people in various religions and or religious institutions.  We are all flawed…including religious people.  But we are all Christians!!!!  We all believe in Jesus!!!!  We are all brothers and sisters in Christ whether we agree on anything else or not!  Get over yourselves and infiltrate religion with the love of Jesus…dont’ reject religion!!!!!!  Be the salt and light Jesus spoke about.  Jesus observed the religious traditions of His time…he also attended services at the synagogue every week and spoke.  Jesus and religion are so intertwined, enmeshed and intricately woven together at this point that to separate them could only do damage!
God Bless!!!!

Hi, most interesting article and comments. The sad thing is that most people regard comments and articles as being something to pay attention to.
There are 1000 books out there and 1000 articles out there that comment on Our Lord, His Son and religion. Everyone has an opinion.
And yet, our Lord set out through His Word, through the Bible, what is and what is not. It is that simple! If articles and opinions concern the reader, then OPEN your Bible and prove them right or wrong!
Dear readers of this, open Your Bibles and forget about the “In my opinion” world! That’s want the Lord wants you to do!!
For the sake of repeating myself, it can’t be said enough!!
Thanks Kellie

This encourages my heart so much. Jesus is alive on this earth right now in people like this guy! My prayer today is for the ones who are in spiritual darkness due to religion, and their belief that they are saved by how they behave, not by Jesus alive in them, their righteousness due to faith, and belief that He is the son of God. It is a dark and lonely place religion. Jesus wants to walk beside us and shine His light through us. What freedom there is when we hold on to Jesus and make HIM our refuge and guide through this life!

In Saudi Arabia, all citizens are qrruieed to be Muslims, and the public practice of other religions is forbidden.  Private practice of other religions is sometimes allowed and sometimes persecuted; there is no law protecting even this.Iran is officially a Twelver Shiite state.  Some other religions (Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism) are permitted, but are not allowed to proselytize; and they are sometimes persecuted even if they don’t.  The Bahai faith is not allowed at all.  Sunni Muslims are subject to some restrictions also.In China, all religious organizations have to be authorized by the government.  This has given rise to conflict when the government appoints religious leaders different from what the religion itself chooses.  There are state-appointed Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Taoist, and Muslim leaders.  These are not always approved by the religious organizations outside of China.  Those who practice religion outside these state-approved organizations are subject to severe persecution. In Turkey, since the secularization by Ataturk in the early 20th century, the government permits all religions but keeps them all under close surveillance.  Special religious clothing (the veil, the fez) is not permitted to be worn in public.  Turkey is predominantly Muslim, and there is some prejudice against other religions. In North Korea, virtually no religious practice is allowed except a limited amount by foreigners.  Worship is considered a political offense.Cuba was for years officially atheist, and religious practice was seriously discouraged, with some persecution.  But now religious people are even allowed to join the Communist Party.  The government is secular rather than atheist, and religious practice is pretty much free. These are a few varied examples of governments which have restricted religious practice.  In our time, the States that restrict religious freedom are mostly Muslim or Atheist.I can’t think of any other belief system that does this in modern times.Religion is the source of meaning and values for many people, and restricting it restricts the growth of the human soul.  In countries where a religion is imposed, it loses some of its growth potential.  In countries where religion is not restricted or mandated by the government, it flourishes and leads to better values and ways of life.

I saw this a few weeks ago. A powerful gmesase for sure! For years I didn’t go to church, because I wasn’t sure how to pick a church or religion. I talked to and spent some time with people from different religions and various churches, it was all really confusing at first. And each person tried to tell me why their church or religion was best. Finally, one day, I drove out to a little church near where I grew up. The people were friendly and welcoming and laid back. They spend a lot of time helping other people in need. They sang lots of songs and shared bible readings. That’s all I needed. It was so simple once I took the obsessive thinking out of the equation. It really is about your relationship with Jesus, not where you go to church, or the name of your religion.

Good morning Craig & all. I was just sinekpag to my brother a few days ago on how we have 40 & 50 year old babies in the church who resist the revelation of Jesus but are defined in Gal.4: 1-3, “Now I say that an heir, as long as he is a ‘child,’ differs nothing from a servant though he be lord of all. But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the Father. Even so we, when we were ‘children’ were in bondage under the elements of the world.”  Imagine this, I was born again for over 22 years, like a child crawling on his hands and knees with ‘diaper rash’ from the law, thinking I was an adult, walking like Jesus. You know what was in my diaper? The dung of my obedience to the law, Phil.3: 8-9 for righteousness because in my high chair I was spoon fed law, law, law and I remained a child!I had my little toddler shirt on like the emblem of Superman but instead of an “S” on it, I had “SF,” meaning Superflesh! As I crawled on the floor, I would play with my building blocks of the law, which are the ‘elements (rituals, ceremonies, feast days, dietary laws, all of which were extentions of the law)’ of the world in Gal.4:3 believing that the more I ‘did’ the more I would learn how to ‘walk like Jesus.’ But, praise God for His Mercy, Jesus Christ & the Grace in Him, I began hearing of the Grace of God in Christ, the gospel and like Paul in 1Cor.13:11, “When I was a child, I spoke, understood and thought like a child (law law law, do this, dont do that, I must do this, I must’nt do that) but when I became a man, Gal.4:3, the time appointed of the Father (being the freedom from the law & freedom from being under it by being under grace)I put away childish things, (the law & faith by or in it & my obedience.) This is exactly what Paul is saying in Gal. 4, everyone under the law is childish, crawling under condemnation & guilt instead of ‘walking like Jesus,’ full of grace & truth by what He did by His obedience under the law. Being free from the law, dead to the law, delivered from the law, enables us to walk like sons & daughters who can take possession of our inheritance in Christ which is impossible as a child under the law!
