Doomsday – No, not tomorrow.

Written by Peter Youngren on May 20th 2011

Tomorrow is the day. Billboards around the world have proclaimed “Judgment Day May 21, 2011”. The “prophet” making the prediction is 89 year-old Harold Camping, president of the California-based Family Radio with 150 broadcasting outlets. Camping’s last prediction for the end of the world was September 1994, and we all know how that one turned out.

In 1000A.D. panic was high in Rome and many gave all their worldly goods to the church because the end of the world was expected as the new millennium dawned.

In 1843, American preacher William Miller predicted the end of the world twice, March 21st and October 22nd. The unfulfilled prophecy became known as the Great Disappointment, as one of the followers reported on the day after, “We wept, and wept, till the day dawned”.

1919, 1982, 1988, 1989 and 2000, were years rife with predictions of the end by respected evangelical preachers. The only ones ahead of us in the foolish prediction business are the Jehovah’s Witness, who predicted doomsday in 1914, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and 1994.

What’s the source for these calculations? Mostly complicated mathematical equations and interpretations of alignments of the stars, and preachers with illusions of grandeur.

Wouldn’t that be the ultimate claim to fame; “I figured out the day of the rapture”.

Meanwhile Jesus said; “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” [Mt 24:14]. 1-2 billion still haven’t heard the Gospel. That should be our focus. That’s why I leave for India late Sunday night. I’m looking for a MEGA-HARVEST of people coming to Christ.

Nothing wrong with looking for the return of our Lord. But the fact we might believe His return will be soon, should be all the more motivation to adhere to the ‘Great Commission’ and go out into all the world, sharing the utterly fantastic news of how much God loves the whole world, as shown clearly in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.

The fact people make these useless predictions time and time again, only proves they have no heart-filled revelation of Jesus Christ, because such a revelation leads to the preaching of the Gospel with passion—which none of these people seem compelled to do!

I love receiving your emails.
They are such an insight to me and trust that others feel the same.  It is a shame the such stunts such as Doomsday tomorrow has hurt the Christian faith.
I am praying that you will have a Mega-Harvest in India like non before. Let’s pray for the Harvest as the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.
Be blessed my brother in Christ!!

No one knows the day or the time. and the timing of God is a mystry to us all.the bible say one day is equvalent to one thousand years and to predict the coming of christ is like you have made aprojection/anticipation of what is to come and why to the sell their possesion to others if the factor of christ coming is a matter affecting all people in the universe.

I agree with the first comment made by Eric.  No one knows the hour, what we should be concentrating on is winning souls; preparing a great harvest; having a passion to win the lost at any cost.
You run with the vision Pastor Peter.

No one knows but the Father, not even the son.  So why do we even bother!

Even though we are @ the time of the end , no one knows the date & time of Christ’s return except the father. what our responsibility ‘ll be is to preach the gospel of Christ in every move of our life & to live as he is coming today.
stay blessed!

No one knows when the lord is coming back for his people, because since you suppose to be so holy you would know that the lord says no man no the day or time I will come back and I will come back in the twinkle of an eye like s thief in the night!  Sooo please stop trying too predict the end of thaa world you are not God so stop trying to be!!!

AMAZING, HOW people believe and act on a lie yet become difficult with truth?.i did not even know of the prophesy except from the unbelivers and the wicked radio stations in kenya which kept repeating the lie.
Peter, your analysis is correct ,
we must reach the lost before the ends comes but what about those who has belived in christ yet live as unbelivers?
We must repent and seek GOD a fresh lest we will be taken by surprise.

The best advice I ever heard on the subject was: Live each day as if it were the last day. Begin that day praising God. Live that day glorifying God. End that day thanking God for His grace and mercy. And then do the same each following day. That way the “end times” will take care of themselves.

May God bless Peter this week and may many more than a million souls be reached by God’s love this week.

It is clearly written in the Bible that until the Gospel the good news have been preached all the world then the End will come. Most of the preachers are preaching about feel good messages, born again message, prosperity gospel among others. Jesus only preached one Gospel, which is Kingdom and that is the only gospel preachers should be preaching.
Since most of the preachers are not doing this, then the end is not near, unpack your Bags since Jesus is not coming soon.

Maybe it wouldn’t hurt for the people to consider the possibility that the *preterists* may understand the bible more clearly when it comes to this topic of ” second coming of Christ”  Words like “at hand, will not delay, in a little while, the last hour, soon, near, quickly, shortly, at the door” etc… actually meant what they said to the first people who wrote and read them. All Scripture was fulfilled in the events surrounding the destruction of Jerusalem (66-70AD). Luke 21:20-22.

I was concerned for those whose hopes have been dashed on the morning of May 22. I’d love to share the preterist view of eschatology with anyone who has “ears to hear.”
